Myrtle Beach Historic District Workshop Planned for Property Owners and Community

The Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation, in partnership with the City of Myrtle Beach, is gearing up for a Historic District Workshop, set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28. The educational workshop takes place at the Historic Myrtle Beach Train Depot, 851 Broadway St., in Myrtle Beach. The workshop serves as an effort to communicate with the business community and interested parties about the positive, potential benefits of the historic designation.

The event was planned after the district received a unanimous vote from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, placing Myrtle Beach’s Historic District on the nomination list for the National Register of Historic Places in late July.  With the nomination now approved, the Myrtle Beach Downtown Historic District continues the process necessary to achieve designation on the National Register of Historic Places. This allows contributing buildings to use state and federal tax credits.

The Myrtle Beach Downtown Historic District nomination is comprised of structures associated with the early development in Myrtle Beach History, spanning from 1927 to 1969. It includes portions of Main Street, Oak Street, Broadway Street, North Kings Highway and Eighth and Ninth Avenues North. In total, 18 contributing buildings and eight noncontributing buildings are under review.

The DRC is eager to host the workshop to help property owners and the community learn more about what the accreditation would mean for Myrtle Beach. And, attendees will  receive information about the financial resources available to property owners who wish to remodel, renovate or modify their building.

For more information and topic coverage, follow the Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation's Facebook page for timely updates at https://www.facebook.com/DRCMyrtleBeach/.
