Damon’s Oceanfront Grill Named June Leading Business of the Month

Ribs, ribs, ribs.

That’s what’s on the menu at our June Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank. Add a dot com and that’s also their web address.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, we’re talking about Damon’s Oceanfront Grill.

Located at 2985 South Ocean Boulevard, Damon’s Oceanfront Grill has something to please every diner. It overlooks the ocean with indoor and outdoor seating, a private dining room available for groups and parties, and a spacious, full-service bar. Offsite catering also is available.

Ribs are a star on the menu, but the options seem endless with chicken, steak, burgers, sandwiches, seafood, salad and more.

But, Damon’s Oceanfront Grill goes beyond just a great menu and view. The restaurant and its management are invested in the community. Mike Robertson is serving a second term on the board of the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association. The restaurant has hosted several chamber and hospitality association events and has generously sponsored several Chamber Academy lunch classes in the last year.

Damon’s Oceanfront Grill joined the chamber in 1991.

Consider visiting next time you dine out for lunch or dinner and be sure to follow them on Facebook @DamonsOceanfrontMB or Twitter @DamonsGrillMB to keep up with the latest menu specials.

For more than 50 years, Horry Georgetown Technical College has provided post-secondary education opportunities across three campuses – one in Conway, one in Myrtle Beach and one in Georgetown.

HGTC is our May Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank. It’s the fourth largest technical college in South Carolina and offers more than 65 degree and certificate programs. Arts, science, business, information/computer technology, nursing, culinary arts, dental hygiene, criminal justice technology and early childhood development are among the many educational offerings at HGTC.

The college was initially established in 1961 as Horry-Marion-Georgetown Technical Education Center. It wasn’t until 1966, by which time it had assumed its current name, did it receive it’s first class of students with 123 members. Since that first graduating class, HGTC has had more than 17,000 students graduate with 90 percent becoming part of the workforce in Horry and Georgetown counties.

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce partners with HGTC in many ways including the offering of some classes at discounted prices through HGTC’s continuing education and workforce development programs.

HGTC also has offerings for community members that aren’t pursuing further education. Find affordable upscale lunches prepared by second-year culinary arts students at the Fowler Dining Room on the Conway campus Tuesdays through Thursdays. There’s also dental clinics which specializes in dental exams, cleanings and X-rays. The Charles F. Freeman Community Dental clinic helps to meet the needs of qualifying patients who may delay treatment for financial reasons. More information about all of the community resources can be found at hgtc.edu/community.

Leonard, Call & Associates Named March Leading Business of the Month Sponsored by South State Bank

Don Leonard said it felt like it was his birthday when we surprised him in the lobby of his office on the corner of 35th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach.

His real estate and development company, Leonard, Call & Associates, is our March Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.

When Leonard moved to the area, he learned that if he wanted to get involved in the community and get to know the movers and shakers quickly, he ought to join the chamber. He did and even served as chair of the board in 1978-1979, when our board terms still ran on the fiscal, not calendar, year.

Leonard is also part of Leonard, Grigg and Associates, a company formed with Roger Grigg in 1990. Together, the pair have developed more than 40 parcels of land including sites now recognized as Kingston Plantation, Mar Vista Grande, Blackmoor, Indigo Creek, and Carolina Forest’s Springlake.

Over the years, Leonard served on many other boards, including the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, South Carolina Hall of Fame, Board of Visitors of the Wall School of Business, Grand Strand Medical Center, National Bank of South Carolina, Brookgreen Gardens and United Way. He also has served on the board of trustees for his alma mater Wake Forest University.

Leonard was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor by Gov. David Beasley in 1997.

He was first appointed to the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank by Gov. Mark Sanford in 2003. He was reappointed by Sanford in 2007. In 2010, Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Leonard to her transition team, and named him chair of the S.C. Transportation Infrastructure Bank in 2011.

February is American Heart Month. So, it's fitting that this month we celebrate the American Heart Association as our Leading Business of the Month sponsored by South State Bank.

The local chapter of the American Heart Association has been a member of the chamber since 1995. The goal of the national nonprofit is to create a world free of heart disease and stroke. The organization raises money to fund medial research an educational programs for the community. The national nonprofit was founded by six cardiologists in 1924.

Locally, the American Heart Association is known for two big fundraisers: the Heart Walk, held annually in the fall, and the Heart Ball, a gala style night held each February.
